Course aims

Let the student learn the LCA concepts and use them in case-studies using SimaPro software.

Course description

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a worldwide-used methodology for the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs and the potential environmental impacts associated with products, processes or services.


Thanks to its holistic perspective — taking into account all the stages from a cradle to grave approach— LCA evaluates the potential impacts related to any economic activity including raw material extraction and processing, distribution, use or consumption, re-use, recycling, and final disposal. People (from R&D at SMEs to policy officials) use LCA for many applications (from designing car bumpers to formulating a national waste policy).

Course content

This course presents the main concepts of LCA in a format accessible to a broad audience.

  • Package 1: Introduction to LCA and its relation with environmental decision support
  • Package 2: In-depth presentation of the main issues in LCA
  • Package 3: SimaPro software modeling and results interpretation
  • Package 4: Specialization modules for selected topics

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and concepts of LCA,
  • Apply LCA methodology in a personal work,
  • Assess the environmental impacts of a system,
  • Propose the best strategy to eco-design systems,
  • Analyze and criticize an LCA already made.

Teaching methods

  • Lectures with PowerPoint slides for theory given by senior researchers,
  • Individual and group exercises in the classroom, including “Business game”,
  • Laboratory practical classes based on tutorials (on Excel & SimaPro software),
  • Time will be reserved to discussions during / at the end of each class.
